Exercise 5 Question 3

1) Discuss the following with the class and post the answers on your blog :-

a) Explain the difference in the sizes of the two tiff files in steps 1) and 2).

1 has no compression but 2 has discarded information through compression.

b) When saving a jpeg file what two things change when you select a different quality factor ?

File size and quality.

c) What is ‘dithering’ and why is it used ?

Dithering is the attempt by a computer program to approximate a colour from a mixture of other
colours when the required colour is not available.

d) Explain the difference in size between the greyscale tiff file and the original tiff file.

Greyscale only has 1 channel so is 1/3 the size.
